Methanol economy of India
Methanol Economy is very latest terminology
which is widely using to describe the impact of methanol on Indian economy. The Government of India is pushing hard to develop Methanol economy for us. Our country require almost 12000 liter per year hydrocarbon fuels (petrol/diesel) to fulfill energy needs. by fulfill this requirement India drains its most valuable foreign reserve, which is approx. over $ 87.7 billion in a fiscal year. Our large consumption of hydrocarbon fuels make us sixth largest consumer and according to an estimate our growing needs of fuel will make us third largest consumer by 2030. Despite of spending a huge amount there are lots of uncertainty in fuel market because of International diplomatic and strategic conditions. There are further more factors that are effect supply of Petroleum products.
Growing petroleum product needs are similarly increasing our dependency on it, and this Dependency does not only limited to fuel requirements but also its impact extended to all other factors on which fuel market dependent.continuously draining out currency by importing crude oil making us
weaken on the economic front, reduce our bargaining power with the rest
of the world and effect our foreign trade, strategic relation with other
nation.
The second most reason to develop Methanol economy is to reduce carbon emissions and protect environment with the green house gases. burning hydrocarbon fuels emit carbon which effect environment adversely. India is the third largest carbon di oxide emitter country in the world. Among the fourteen highest polluted cities of the world, thirteen cities are related to India.
Our Hon'ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set a goal to reduce 10% carbon emission by the 2022. He is recently awarded by the Champions of the Earth by UN, for his initiatives and concern about the environment. It makes India to show much more sensibility on environment protection by reduce pollution in India.
Therefore, we badly need to have another alternative sources of energy which may compete and replace hydrocarbon fuel with no pollution.
Methanol:
Methanol is an elective wellspring of hydrocarbon based fills which can without much of a stretch supplant petroleum, diesel in transportation including Railways, Marines, control age and LPG, Kerosene, wood as cooking fuel. Methanol consumes productively in all inward burning motors, creates no particulate issue , no sediment , nearly nil SOX and NOX emanations (NEAR ZERO POLLUTION). The vaporous adaptation of Methanol – DME can mixed with LPG and can be great substitute for diesel in Large transports and trucks.
Methanol can be produced from natural gas ,Indian high coal ash, Bio-mass etc. India can achieve to produce Methanol @ Rs.19 a liter from Indian coal and all other feed stock. The best part world is already moving towards renewable methanol from carbon-di-oxide and the perpetual recycling of carbon-di-oxide into Methanol,
What India Doing ?
India has already been installed Methanol Production limit of 2 MT/annum. This arrangements will utilize Indian High Ash coal, Stranded gas, and Biomass and it can recreate 20MT of methanol yearly by 2025. India, with 125 Billion Tons of demonstrated Coal stores and 500 million tones of Biomass created each year and the immense amounts of Stranded and Flared gases has a gigantic potential for guaranteeing vitality security dependent on interchange feedstock and energizes.
Summary:
You can think yourself that if we reduce 20% diesel consumption in next five to seven years and will save approx. Rs 26,000 crore in a year how much it can help in our economy.
India is planning initially mix methanol 15% in petrol, which will reduce 33 % of pollution and 15% less consumption and import which again helps to strong economy and environment. This ration will gradually increased to 85% and instead of Diesel it will be 100% used in transportation.
At least 20 per cent diesel consumption can be reduced in next five to seven years and will result in a savings of Rs 26,000 crore annually,
